My worst fears about this book were confirmed when it arrived in the mail. When Amazon advertised it, I thought that the Pirates' hadn't been eliminated from the playoffs long enough for the Post-Gazette to do their season justice and write the full story. But I ordered it anyway, hoping that modern technology would enable this to be a complete work.Unfortunately, I was completely wrong. The latest article from the Post-Gazette the book has is dated September 3. They totally neglected the entire last month of the season and the playoffs!!! In order to turn a quick buck, the PG embarrassed themselves and tossed their journalistic integrity down the drain. The Pirates and their fans deserve FAR better than what the PG gave us. I could not recommend this shoddy, incomplete book to anyone, and will have to think long and hard before ever buying a product from them again.

What a disappointing effort. Thanks to other reviewers of this book (notably Mr. Chmelovski), I went into my purchase understanding what this book was going to be. This book was put together with very little forethought. There isn't a summary of the season. There isn't a summary of previous seasons or any kind of detail around how the team was put together. Many of the articles they have reprinted in this are game recaps with minimal depth and little context within the framework of 2013. Plus, the last article was written in early September - so we don't even have any coverage of the 2013 post-season.On top of that, there are a couple of issues with the book - one factual and one typographical. The article reprinted from 4/1/12 by J. Brady McCollough is about Sid Bream. It states Bream "played for the Pirates for five years before being traded to the Braves." Bream wasn't dealt away. He was signed by Atlanta as a free agent. Given how he much he came into play during the 1992 NLCS, not having the type of transaction that saw him leave Pittsburgh is a glaring, inexcusable error. Also, the very last article in the book - by Ron Cook on 9/1/13 - misspells the last name of Marlon Byrd in the headline. The spelling in the headline is 'Bird'. Given that this book is brief and has many photographs (the photographs are the only thing that saved this book from one star - the photography is fantastic), it is a quick read and both of these issues should've been caught by anyone who was paying attention.

Great book

This book documents the first winning season for this team in almost 20 years. It will be a Christmas gift for my Pittsburgh born husband.

At the age of 54, suffering from myopia, astigmatism and strabismus most of my life, I'm finally seeing almost normally within 6 weeks. I'm still working at it. My left eye sees perfectly, the right eye is not far behind. Eyes are in the process of straightening. A noticeable difference in 6 days. Doctors have consistently told me there is no hope in getting relief from strabismus as an adult. The techniques explained in this book are proving the doctors wrong. There are sections of the book that are difficult to understand and require experimentation to understand what he is saying. Not everything works for every individual, so I like that he gives alternative techniques so you can choose which one works for you. I live in a place where it is difficult to consult with a vision therapist, so I have only used this book as a guide to better sight. I used to see double with my right eye (left eye closed). Left eye very blurry. I never would have considered driving without glasses. In 2 weeks I started driving without glasses and I feel confident and comfortable. I haven't worn glasses in a month now. I definitely recommend this book, if you are tired of the headaches, eye strain and irritability. I had nothing to lose and I'm enjoying the gain.

I know this might sound as publicty. Well, so be it. This method helped me get rid of my glasses. I am 54 years old and I was prescribed use of glasses since I was 48. Three times prescription was changed to increase the degree of my glasses. Now, after some four months or so of following this method (I am not too disciplined, by the way) I use not glasses anymore, not only in the office, but in reading books as well. I still have to improve, but all I can say is this method works and works well. You buy it or not, it's up to you.

If you want to learn directly from the teacher, buy this.

The author mentions an included test card that can be used to do the recommended eye exercises. This card is missing from the kindle version which makes the purchase worthless.

The beginning of the book is very dense with an introduction to eye anatomy and vision physiology (most of which Bates acknowledges you do not need to know to improve your vision), but after a third of the way in, the very practical, and sometimes even astonishing, insights and findings Bates relays will make you reconsider everything you've been told about vision. This man did incredible work and I believe this book and the practices he encourages will find their way back into the mainstream in the coming years.. as it's very much a part of the mindfulness movement happening in the world. Having finished the book, I plan to incorporate his advice to improve my own vision, relax my mind, and overcome my mental strain, from this day forward. I hope you get a lot out of it too.

The book is great but there is no eye chart included which it says it does on the cover. Without it, you can not practice the method of the book.

Dr. Bates has some great insights and exercises for improving eyesight. I learned about Dr. Bates through a reference from more current book on the subject, and almost neglected to read from the source. I am so glad I ordered this, because the reference to Bates' ideas were so superficial and misunderstood in the book by another Dr. that it missed the primary points entirely. The only complaint I have is that this book states on both covers that an eye chart is included--it is not. I ordered a replacement after the first book, and it was the same--no chart.

From what I understand, Bates is a pioneer in vision therapy, and almost every other book on vision improvement I've read seems to copy some of his original methods. Bates seems to have quite a bit of experience and knowledge about the eyes. The examples he shares are astounding and motivating. The basic premise is that of relaxation. The book is not the easiest to reference, as it is quite technical, but the explanations provide a "why" that is lacking in other books. The "hows" could stand to be a little more simplified. I purchased the book used, and therefore did not receive the "test card" that Bates mentions so frequently. I assume that the test card is probably a miniature eye chart.

Great book! It shows the evolution of hip-hop and the influencers beyond some of the greats. It also provides insight into how they helped change how companies invested and branded beyond the music. By leveraging their own brands, they were able to create a legacy with "new money."

...Harvard professor Juliet Schor has written a timely and convincing work. Schor's argument is that people are actually happier when they are not obsessed with craving material luxuries.Schor's perspective is balanced, realistic, and moderate. Unlike books that offer advice on money management, Schor cuts to the quick and goes to the heart of the problem: we buy not because we need but because we attempt to find identity, status, or security through our purchases.The volume is divided into seven chapters. The first is titled, "Introduction," but is not really merely an introduction. It is a chapter in the fullest sense and might better be titled, "overview." Let me share one of numerous quotables from this section: "American consumers are often not conscious of being motivated by social status and are far more likely to attribute such motives to others than to themselves. We live with high levels of psychological denial about the connection between our buying habits and the social statements they make."The second chapter, "Communicating With Commodities" discusses how people crave the standard of living portrayed by television sitcoms. The American majority is frustrated (and sometimes desperate to attain such a standard) because they compare themselves to these fictious upper middle classed lifestyles. Shcor illustrates where this can lead by referring to the "sneaker murders" where people were actually killed for their shoes (of the "proper" brand, of course).The third chapter, "The Visible Lifestyle" emphasizes the sub-conscious quest for status. In her typically well-balanced perspective, she distinguishes between, "the desire [for] social status [and]...trying to avoid social humiliation." This is a GREAT chapter.The fourth chapter, "When Spending Becomes You" is also superb. She quotes one statistic that 61 per cent of the population ALWAYS has something in mind they look forward to buying. She also discusses how religion used to curtail obsessive materialism and spending, but no longer does. As a professional clergymen, I'll second that. She is right.The last two chapters, "The Downshifter Next Door" and "Learning Diderot's Lesson" offer practical ways to attack this problem. We must change our attitudes and view frugality as a virtue, not a vice. She offers several case studies of "downshifters," those who have decided that, once past a modest financial threshold, family, time, and the deeper things of life are worthy of financial sacrifice.This volume exposes how shallow, foolish, and silly our society has become in our uncontrollable culture of reckless spending. It is a gem of a book, worth your time for sure!

Below are key lessons in the form of excerpts that I found particularly insightful from this book in which Juliet "analyzes the crisis of the American consumer in a culture where spending has become the ultimate social act":1- "While I believe all Americans are deeply affected by consumerism, this book is directed to people...whose income afford comfortable lifestyle. I focus on more affluent consumers not because I believe that inequalities of consuming power are unimportant. Far from it. They are at the heart of the problem. But I believe that achieving an equitable standard of living for all Americans will require that those of us with more comfortable material lives transform our relationship to spending. I offer this book as a step in that direction."2- "This book is about why: About why so many middle-class Americans feel materially dissatisfied...How even a six-figure income can seem inadequate, and why this country saves less than virtually any other nation in the world. It is about the ways in which, for America's middle classes, "spending becomes you," about how it flatters, enhances, and defines people in often wonderful ways, but also how it takes over their lives...IT analyzes how standards of belonging socially have changes in recent decades, and how this change has introduced American to highly intensified spending pressures. And finally, it is about a growing backlash to the consumption culture, a movement of people who are downshifting - by working less, and living their consumer lives much more deliberately."3- "...Even though products carry well-recognized levels of prestige, are associated with particular kinds of people, or convey widely accepted messages, we cannot automatically infer the motivations of the consumers who buy them...There are other sources of meaning (beyond social inequalities). Gender, ethnicity, personal predisposition, and many other factors help structure the meanings and motivation attached to consuming."4- "First, for a significant number of branded and highly advertised products, there are no quality differences discernible to consumers when the labels are removed; and second, variation in prices typically exceeds variation in quality, with the difference being in part a status premium...The extra money we spend could arguably be better used in other ways - improving our public schools, boosting retirement savings, or providing drug treatment for the millions of people the country is locking up in an effort to protect commodities others have acquired. But unless we find a way to dissociate what we buy from who we think we are, redirecting those dollars will prove difficult indeed."5- "Today, in a world where being middle-class is not good enough for many people and indeed that social category seems like an endangered species, securing a place means going upscale. But when everyone is doing it, upscaling can mean simply keeping up. Even when we are aiming high, there's a strong defensive component to our comparisons. We don't want to fall behind or lose the place we've carved out for ourselves."6- "To maintain psychological comfort, most of us must transcend the strictures of the current consumption map...The first step is to decouple spending from our sense of worth, a connection basic to all hierarchical consumption maps. The second is to find a reference group for whom a low-cost lifestyle is socially acceptable."7- "I outline nine principles to help individuals, and the nation, get off the consumer escalator...1) Controlling desire...2) Creating a new consumer symbolism: making exclusivity uncool...3) Controlling ourselves: voluntary restraints on competitive consumption...4) Learning to share: both as a borrower and a lender be...5) Deconstruct the Commercial system: Becoming an Educated Consumer...6) Avoid "Retail Therapy": Spending is Addictive...7) Decommercialize the Rituals...8) Making Time: Is work-and-spend working?...9) The need for a coordinate intervention."8- "It can hardly be possible that the dumbing-down of America has proceeded so far that it's either consumerism or nothing. We remain a creative, resourceful, and caring nation. There's still time left to find our way out of the mall."

Schorr is a fine writer with a good idea, but the lightweight and naive solutions she suggests to solve our overspending are clearly New York editor-think. Like a disjointed movie written by a committee that provides an inappropriate happy ending, Schorr's many editors (she bemoans losing the one who acquired her manuscript) wouldn't let her research speak for itself. Her suggestion that Americans share their riding lawnmowers is perhaps the single dumbest thing I've ever read in a serious book; she must have passively-aggressively written the concluding chapters under duress. Unless they're padding. This is a mighty short book as it is.

This is a very well researched book and has many interesting ideas on how to spend less and worry less about things we don't really "need" but really "want." My only concerns were in the section about "downshifters" - people who work less and make less, but are happier. The book notes that most people who "downshift" were only making $30,000 a year or so to start with - not a lot of room to maneuver downward. I was interested more in those who made much more but kept spending more, which she also alludes to. Still, a very interesting book, with some intriguing ideas about how to control expenditures.

If I were to be totally truthful with myself, I would identify as an agnostic. I was when I was in college, and tried to change my beliefs for my wife, who is religious, but I never really believed any of the material I was presented with to read.This book spoke to my beliefs. It identifies what an agnostic is and how they view the world around them. It was well written, easy to read and thoughtful. I would recommedn it tio any person who has doubts about their religious beliefs and especially those that identify as "spiritual but no religious" as I have done for a number of years.

We read this book in a group that I attend and it was a great source of discussion about important themes within our faith community. I want to read other books that she has written. She writes very well and is very thoughtful and funny. A thought provoking book.

This is exactly the type of book I love. It was like a conversation with a friend about ideas and concepts that arenâ€™t part of every day banter. A very timely read as out culture struggles with the concept of religions role in society and the rise of the â€œspiritual non religiousâ€.

Do you believe in God, yes or no? If someone were to ask me what my spiritual beliefs are in a question like this, it would be impossible to answer. Yet statistics that come from such simplistic, religious polls are often used to reflect what populations believe about the existence of God. Lesley Hazleton has written a thoughtful, respectful book that articulates a perspective other than a binary answer to that question. This is not a book written to convince you to believe one way or another. You will not find answers that eradicate your spiritual doubt nor require you to reject all of your spiritual beliefs. Rather, the author poetically describes the joy that can be embraced in the mysteries and possibilities of not knowing. Critics who hold polarized views on the existence of a religious God may find that they are cut from the same cloth. This book wonderfully represents possibilities for the rest of us who can't answer a solid yes or no to that question.

Knitting For Beginners: The A-Z Guide to Have You Knitting in 3 Days, is a wonderfully comprehensive book that covers all the elements of learning how to knit. This book breaks down everything from the supplies to will need, to how to knit left handed, which in my case is very necessary.Emma Brown goes into great detail about what yarns to use for which project and how to care for the materials to make it longer lasting, as well as the needle size you should be using and how to hold them correctly. She talks about how to understand patterns and includes a glossary of all knitting terminology as well as step by step pattern guide.This book very cleverly contains every style of knitting, to create interesting pieces that look more complicated than they are. Making you seem like an expert.If you are keen to learn a wonderful and new hobby this comprehensive and easy to use guide is for you. I highly recommend it!

The formatting of the book is well-done. The knitting instructions were well-detailed and usually accompanied with photos. I am a new knitter with very little hand-eye coordination, but I was able to get a few stitches in! The knitting patterns at the end are super cute and the instructions are easy to follow. My cousin is expecting her first-born and I plan to knit her a pair of booties :)All in all, the book breaks down everything you can possibly need to know about knitting for beginners. I highly recommend the book for beginners and those looking to refresh their memories.

This book was great for beginners! While most beginnerâ€™s books just give simple patterns to follow, Emma Brown did that and more while still starting all the way at the basics, mentioning important details such as how to hold the knitting needles or how to pick what type of yarn you will need. She also had a great format in that it was easy to read while not at all boring like some other books I have seen discussing knitting for beginners. The colorful illustrations proved quite helpful and were easy to follow. I also enjoyed the fact that she gave a glossary for commonly seen abbreviations, so now reading more advanced knitting books does not seem so hard â€“ this is a great book to refer to. I love that I can even start designing some of my own patterns now. Overall, I highly recommend this book for all knitters who would like to learn some new stitches or patterns, not necessarily just beginners

Let me begin by saying that I borrowed a "beginners" book about knitting from a friend about a month ago that was so confusing that I just gave it up. This book, Knitting For Beginners: The A-Z Guide to Have You Knitting in 3 Days is the exact opposite.I'm going to 3 baby showers before the end of the year. The baby blanket and the little hat are the ones I plan on making for the baby showers. I have a friend who wants me to knit him a face mask for Halloween (he works at a Haunted House attraction every year), so I'm really looking forward to doing that, too.The format of the way everything is laid out is simple and easy to understand. Really, this is more of a Knitter's Survival Guide. Seriously, if you're trying to get into Knitting, or you're still new, I would highly recommend this book.

Honestly, one of the worst self-help books I've ever had. I ordered this because I wanted to teach myself how to knit, obviously (I already knew how to crochet). This book is a mess. They teach you in a completely out of order, super illogical way, and they give you almost NO details on different techniques. Right away within the first pages they'll say "perform this maneuver with the yarn," and you have to flip forward through dozens of pages to actually find out what that maneuver is. The step-by-step instructions are extremely vague, and I spent many frustrated hours trying to unlock the meanings behind all of their instructions. Eventually I gave up and just turned to YouTube videos and blogs. 100% more easier than trying to learn from this book. If a young adult with a graduate degree can't figure this out, I would doubt that your average senior citizen can. Save yourself the money (luckily, it was only $5) and learn for free from YouTube/Google, or buy a different book.

Just what I needed to relearn how to knit after a almost 50 year hiatus.
