The story was interesting, and the character development was progressing along nicely, but then all of a sudden, it's like someone told Emily Giffin "you need to wrap this up", and everything sped up dramatically! It felt very rushed in the later half of the book.

I was sadly disappointed with this novel. I usually adore Emily Giffins work, but not so much with this one. It WAS a good storyline that had me finishing in about 3 days. But there was just so much political vomit! I felt as though Giffin was attempting to sway the reader into viewing most, if not all, wealthy, conservative/republican white people (which I am far from) as low-key racists, sexists philanderers who only look out for number 1 at ANY cost. I understand the want/need to be able to relate to readers & to stay relevant, but it just felt to me that Giffin overly interjected her own political bias. And as other reviewers have mentioned, the ending seem rushed & there was no REAL closer given everything that happened as the plot unfolded, just a few references in the epilogue. Many questions are left unanswered.

I honestly felt my IQ lowering as I read this book. I enjoyed her first few books but they have progressively gotten worse. The narrative of the mother is laughable and totally unrealistic, and the ending felt rushed. I am baffled that there are so many good reviews of this book

The preoccupation with material wealth, the inability to really connect with her husband or sonâ€¦ this just isnâ€™t who she is. Any of it.Tom is desperately trying to be a good father to Lyla, his beautiful and intelligent daughter. When she got a scholarship to Windsor Academy he is a bit worried, but very proud. Lyla is trying to keep up with her classmates both academically and socially. Itâ€™s a different world and sometimes the differences are glaring.A picture snapped in a moment of drunkenness spins out of control. Windsor Academy is going insane with rumors and casting blame. In the eye of the scandal are Tom, Lyla and Nina. Each one is forced to question the relationships of those closest to them, and who they really are.My thoughts:I could not put this book down. It was gorgeously written, and moving. The trio of narratives was an interesting touch. I really enjoyed being able to see more of these characters, their thoughts and motives. These were really interesting, well developed characters. I loved Lyla especially. Tom with the chip on his shoulder and Nina who desperately wants to be seen as a good woman.As far as the plot goes, I found it really intriguing and I loved the different twists and turns that kept me guessing. Through out the book I both loathed and loved certain characters, wanting to believe in them, but not knowing if I can. Itâ€™s definitely a different world. I also like how they portrayed the young victim- it was very believable. The horror, shame, inability to believe, and the desire to let it all just fade away. Her strength was also something I really loved. I feel like this book has a lot of adult moments, but also a lot that older teens would like as well. For me, this is a five star book.On the adult content scale, this is pretty high. Thereâ€™s a lot of language and sexual content as well as drinking. While I would, as I said, see no issue with an older and more mature teen reading it, I have to say itâ€™s meant for adults. I give it an eight.I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book from Netgalley and Random House Publishing in exchange for an honest review. My thanks!

I've read a good many of Emily Giffin's books and she's definitely a talented author, but don't go into this one expecting a lighthearted rom-com. The story here, despite its fairly festive, and slightly deceptive cover and title, is no romantic romp. In her more recent novels, Giffin has trended towards more serious family drama, and with this one she jumps into that deep end for sure.This is the story of the Brownings, one of Nashville's golden couples whose son, Finch, attends a prestigious private school and whose parents, old money Kirk, and the less entrenched Nina, rule the social scene. Tom, on the other hand, is a (mostly) single father, whose daughter, Lyla, attends Windsor Academy on scholarship.The book and marketing are extremely coy about how the two families become inextricably intertwined, though it's revealed very early on and is the entire crux of the book, but if you don't want to know, skip to after the next ellipses ...[slight spoiler warning]While his parents attend yet another benefit, Princeton-bound Finch Snapchats a picture of a passed out, partially disrobed Lyla captioned with a racist joke, which soon the whole school has seen and changes both their lives.[/end small spoiler]... How both sets of parents, and children, handle the fallout, is the entire story. The focus is very much on the parents here, namely Tom and Nina, both of whom come at the issue with their kids in different ways due to their own, troubled pasts, which are fairly quickly revealed. Lyla gets a bit more attention in the story, but Finch and Kirk have a fairly skimpy place in this tale.This is fast-paced and, while not always 100% credibleâ€”I think the author likes Nina way more than I, the reader, didâ€”it does set up some semi-interesting moral dilemmas, though none are handled especially subtly.It's also a terrifying read as a parent, as you see the many, many ways kids can make incredibly bad, life-changing decisions in mere seconds, which we are completely unable to protect them from. Not that Giffin leans in too much to that aspect, making pretty clear moral judgements that will allow most readers to fall comfortably into the, "this could never happen to me," camp. But, I could see a similar, more nuanced scenario that would ultimately make for a more interesting story, where the moral black and white is much more shades of gray and yeah-it-COULD-happen-to-you.I wavered between three and four stars here, and settled on the latter most because this one was fast-paced and Giffin is an adapt author who knows how to tease out a page turner. ALL WE EVER WANTED kept me engaged until the end, even through its more predictable plot points and ultimately unsatisfying ending, and I finished it in just two settings. Not terribly deep, it's still a decent read.

I gave this book 1 star because zero was not an option. This book is a string of cliches made worse by weak characters, weak plot and a totally predictable ending. A really disappointing book - my first and last book by this author. If you are like the characters in this book who are so rich they never qudestion wasting their money buy this book but don't waste your time reading it.

Tamara is a young girl who has trouble with one of the Grabowsky`s Muscle Man. This selection takes place on July of 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon. (It's also when Agent K of Men in Black launched the Arc Net) Tamara's BBF is Kebsie Grobsner, who Tamara tries to write letters to, but fails due to the un/relocation of Kebsie by Muscle Man's caseworker. Another character of this story is Mary Beth Grabowsky. She gets real prissy when Tamara does things that nobody agrees with. As you read the end of this book, you'll be space bound just like Men in Black.

Tamaira Simpson is a girl who believes in truth and fairness. What could be wrong with that? The kids on Ramble Street could tell you. Tamaira's best friend moves away unexpectedly and is replaced by a new foster child on the block. She tries to compensate for her hurt feelings and sense of loneliness by single-handedly taking down Muscle Man McGinty, right or wrong.Set on Long Island in 1969, the author incorporates the Vietnam War and the historic Apollo 11 moon landing into her moving novel filled with characters that today's children will easily relate to.This book will delight both voracious and reluctant readers with its humor and pathos. As a school librarian, I am including this winner on my summer reading list. I hope the Newbery committee reads this one!

Great book I can picture every character perfectly and although this story is funny it also has a heart warming story of a friendship a sad story of a boy and his parents death and a story about a brave young man who dies in war this book may be sad but turns out to be a long story of how two people who are very different that come to have a strong bond

A delightful story of a young girl growing up in the age of men on the moon. The author understands young people. A gifted writer.

The books were in great shape. The hard back was an exceptional value, considering how good it's shape was. I am very happy with the purchase.

I happened to listen to the audio version while my daughter read the book. Nan Marino is a terrific writer and is a great storyteller. She paints a vivid picture of 1960s Long Island, a time where innocence is lost due to the Vietnam War. Marino allows us inside the mind of the main character, a bully, so effectively.While trying to understand why no one on her block sees "Muscle Man McGinty" for what he is, a lying snake, she battles her own emotional shortcomings.I recommend this book to families to read together and understand why bullies may act the way they do. While I do not sympathize totally with any bully, there are reasons, as so accurately pointed out by this brilliant book, for their hehavior.It's the first book I've read from a perspective of a young, female bully. And Ms. Marino hit a home run.

My 9 year-old son said "It's just okay. I like the "Trouble with Chickens" better." He is a very good reader and read all of the books on the Sunshine State reader list.This was his least favorite, even over the books with a girl as protaganist.

great book. a little boring sometimes but was good. i would reccomed this book to kids. I wish the ending revealed more but good.

Cranberries Vaccinium spp. HABITAT: Three species of wild cranberry are native to our region: small cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccus), large cranberry (V. macrocarpon) and northern mountain cranberry (V. vitis-idaea var. minus). All are found in wet, acidic areas such as sphagnum bogs, swampy spots and fens. GROWTH: A ground-hugging trailing plant; technically a subshrub, but vine-like in growth habit. Stems are slender and hairless. Cranberry plants often take root at the leaf nodes, forming dense mats. LEAVES: Smooth, hairless, leathery evergreen leaves grow alternately on the slender stems. Leaves of small cranberry are less than 3â„8 inch long, lance-shaped with pointed tips, and white underneath; edges are rolled. Leaves of large cranberry are 1â„4 to 5â„8 inch long, narrowly oval with blunt tips, and pale underneath, but not as white as those of small cranberry; edges are flat or very slightly rolled. Leaves of northern mountain cranberry are 1â„4 to 3â„4 inch long, egg-shaped with rounded tips; undersides have tiny black resin dots (visible with a lens). FRUIT: A tart, but delicious, red berry. Fruits of northern mountain cranberry and small cranberry grow on stalks at the tip of the stem; those of large cranberry grow along the stem rather than at the tip. Large cranberry has the largest fruits, averaging 1â„2 inch across; those of the other two species are 3â„8 inch or less. The fruits of large cranberry look out of proportion to the tiny leaves. There are no toxic look-alikes. SEASON: Cranberries ripen in late summer to early fall, and may persist on the evergreen plants through winter if not eaten by birds. COMPARE: Several plants with edible berries have similar appearance. Creeping snowberry (pg. 258) has white berries; stems and leaves are hairy. Creeping wintergreen (pg. 110) has larger leaves, up to 2 inches. Both creeping snowberry and wintergreen smell spicy when crushed. Bearberry (pg. 108) has larger leaves, up to 1 inch, which are pointed at the base and broadly rounded at the tip. NOTES: Cranberries are best when cooked, but can be eaten raw.

I'm working as a camp counselor in Wisconsin surrounded by loads of different bushes and plants....wowee this book is just amazing! Very clear pictures and details explaining the different kinds of berries that I see all the time... I've impressed many campers with my "deep insight" all thanks to this book! I am being 100% honest when I say GET THIS BOOK if you are even mildly interested in berry hunting. I have found no books that even come close to how easy-to-read and informative this book has been so far.

This book is a miracle. First of all, it's the first book I've had in a while that BLOWS AWAY the information you can find on the internet. If you are even remotely interested in berries or edible plants, this will be a real eye opener.When I walk through my park now, I see food everywhere. I have found no less than FOUR different edible plants growing wild that no one had ever noticed. This book makes you an expert in no time. Within the first week, my sister and I had successfully foraged wild gooseberries, chokecherries, fire cherries, dewberries and a ton of autumn olives.I will now be hunting down any other books in this series that might be available -- I would love to have the same success with identifying onions and other wild vegetables, or mushrooms.

We were looking for something that would identify the different berries we came across up north at our cabin. I found many that were drawings of the plant and fruit or very poor photos... I read the reviews on this book and thought well it cant be any worse than what I already have and what we had found on the internet. We were very pleased with this book... great photos--a very were small photos, but over all nice photos... loved how it was organized by the color of the berries which made for very quick reference while on the hiking trail... Loved that it not only gave you edible berries but toxic ones as well.. as many times we just wondered what they were, not if you could eat them or not.... loved how this book gave you a snid-bit of what the fruit is best used for. We were very pleased and very impressed with this book... I would recommend it.

Absolutely relevant in Southern Michigan. Contains specific, complete and clear details to allow a positive identification of the plant in question, to include "Compare to" notes to direct you to plant listings that are similar (and possibly toxic). Forage with confidence.

We bought this little guide as we live in a very wooded area and are always out finding new plants with berries or fruits on them and had no idea of what they were. We have already used this guide extensively. It is well written, shows good color photos of the plants with the berries or fruits on them, including many in various seasons if the berries or fruits turn colors later in the growing season. Very handy guide and a good purchase!

The book arrived on time and was in the described condition. It's a very useful field guide and makes fall and winter nature walks more interesting because you can figure out what the fruits are. Great full-page glossy photos (4x6"). Fruits are arranged by color so no botanical knowledge is needed. Each fruit has range map, and description of habitat, leaves, growth pattern, season.

This book is the perfect size for taking with you while hiking or exploring. The pictures are great and info is helpful. My favorite part is that they are organized by color. Super easy to use and kid friendly. Great buy!! (Used in Upper Michigan as well.)

This is just what I was looking for. Lots of clear pictures and good descriptions for the beginner. It is small enough for field use but not so small that a person can't use it easily. Well organized and user friendly.

This book has revolutionized my cooking style - especially with simple techniques like charring vegetables and spices instead of sautÃ©ing them. The range of dishes is impressive and the recipes come out great. Some of them are time-consuming and most of them are designed for 6-8 or more people, but I've had good luck tailoring them down to two or four servings. We don't have good Yucatecan or Mayan restaurants where I live, but luckily I've been able to get all the necessary ingredients at local Latino markets. The book also provides suppliers of ingredients as well.

I was delighted to find this book that had several recipes I've been looking for - Pavo en escabeche and Pavo Negro. We used to enjoy these at a family restaurant in Pasadena (CA) that disappeared. Most Mexican cookbooks do not include Yucatec Maya recipes - which these are.The directions are easy to understand, and he gives alternative ingredients for not commonly found ones. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for some rich and spicy dishes (chili heat can be adjusted for taste).

Super awesome delicious tasty food. Recipes can be involved but are easy to follow. Iâ€™ve traveled the YucatÃ¡n, Belize and Guatemala and every recipe Iâ€™ve tried is just like being there.

Steve Blass is a member of a very small group, and for the moment we're not talking about pitchers who have won the seventh game of a World Series with a complete game.No, we're talking about people who have had "diseases" named after them. If scientists aren't included, the list if pretty small. Lou Gehrig disease, or ALS, comes to mind immediately, but that's about it.Blass was close to the top of the baseball world, in part because of that Series win, when he suddenly couldn't throw a baseball over home plate. He went from World Series hero in 1971 to unemployed baseball player within a few years, all because he somehow couldn't throw strikes any more. And anytime it happens to someone else, he is diagnosed with having "Steve Blass Disease." Ask Rick Ankiel and Mark Wohlers about it.The story about Blass and the disease opens "A Pirate for Life," and is the best part of it. What does a person in the prime of his career do and feel when he mysteriously loses his central talent of throwing strikes? You can imagine the mental anguish. What's more, Blass seems like the last guy in the world who would have such a problem, as he prided him on being the life of the clubhouse.Blass grew up in rural Connecticut and signed with the Pirates out of high school. It took him a while to work his way up the ladder, but he became a good pitcher along the way. Finally, Blass reached the majors in 1964, and eventually earned a regular job in the Pirates' rotation. He was quite good in his prime -- not Sandy Koufax or Bob Gibson, but he was a consistent winner and even turned up in an All-Star Game.As we discover here, Blass provided some of the life in some good Pirate teams of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Those teams were known for their ethnic diversity as much as its talents, as whites, blacks and Latins meshed nicely. It sounds like the pitcher was in charge of keeping everyone loose and united, a job he did well and with a great deal of relish.There's no time for joking when it comes to Game Seven of the Series, and Blass' description of his feeling during that day is quite interesting. No, you don't sleep well the night before, but he was awake enough to shut down the Orioles and bring a championship to Pittsburgh.That win seems like it was a Faustian bargain -- "Would you trade a World Series title for the end of your career?" -- and Blass soon was out of baseball. He sold high school class rings and beer for a while, but eventually worked his way into broadcasting. Blass has stayed there ever since, relying in part on that goofy side of his personality and his love of the Pirates to become very popular in Pittsburgh.Blass certainly sounds like he's enjoyed much of the ride, and there are some stories here about his Pirate teammates and other associates that draw laughs. In fact, it's easy to wonder after a while if Blass didn't have a little too much fun. He went to a great many functions and had a lot of late nights. There are lots of drinking stories and some crude language.After reading this, it's not a surprise that his wife left him for a while. A baseball player has some odd hours, and it's usually the wife who must take care of the household and the children. While Blass admits that he should have been around more for his family, the rest of the book's tone indicates that he doesn't have a great many regrets either.Those who have grown up listening to Blass as a fun-loving broadcaster ought to like "A Pirate for Life." A Pirate for Life, by Steve Blass with Erik Sherman, is a very interesting sports autobiography. Steve Blass made it to Major League Baseball in 1964 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and had an outstanding pitching career with them. In the 1971 World Series, Blass won game three and game seven to help the Pirates become the World Champions. I was attending the University of Pittsburgh during that time and, although I could not attend any of those WS games, I certainly participated in the celebration after the Bucs won game seven. Unfortunately, during the 1973 season, Blass suddenly lost his ability to throw strikes, and he had to give up what he had dreamed of doing since he was a youngster. Since then, Steve Blass Disease has become the name of the condition when other pitchers have suddenly lost their control. Although Steve Blass was forced to quit playing baseball in 1974, he has managed to maintain a lifelong relationship with the Pirates organization and team. He has been working as a sportscaster for Pirates games since 1983, and I enjoy seeing (and hearing) him when I watch their games on TV. For me, a lifelong Pirates fan, this was a fantastic book because Blass writes about his relationships and experiences with many of the Pirates' players and managers during and after he was player. It was a wonderful experience for me to read about the players' backgrounds, careers, and personalities. It was even better to read Blass' personal reminiscences about players, including Roberto Clemente, Dick Groat, Bill Mazeroski, Bill Virdon, Gene Alley, Richie Hebner, Doc Ellis, Manny Sanguillen, Al Oliver, Willie Stargell, Bob Moose, and many more. Likewise, it was great to learn more about Pirates' managers Danny Murtaugh, Harry Walker, and Jim Leyland and about the longtime Pirates' radio and TV sportscaster, Bob Prince (The gunner). It was also great to read about the Pirates organization and to learn more about the current broadcast cadre, whose work I enjoy very much. Of course, this is an autobiography and Blass is very candid about the ups and downs of his life. However, overall he communicates to the reader that he realizes how lucky he has been and how grateful he is for the life he has lived. If you have been a longtime fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, you must read this book. If you are a fan of baseball, you ought to read this book. If you enjoy reading well-written autobiographies by people (especially sports people) who reveal their struggles and successes through an informative and positive narrative, you ought to read this one. I thought it was great!

It usually takes me at least a month to read a book; reading 8-10 pages a night before bed. But I read this book in less than a week it was that good. Baseball stories seem to be the best in all sports, and the stories that Blass tells are priceless and hilarious. The book is well organized, starting with the thing that most of us wonder about the most his downfall from "the disease". Then going back to his youth, eventually signing with the Pirates and his life after pitching.I've been a Pirate fan since I was a boy, but didnt follow baseball seriously til 1975 so my memories of the early 70s Pirates is a little vague and this book filled in a lot of that for me. I vaguely remember Blass going down to AAA Charleston where I now live. He and Bob Walk are my favorite Pirate announcers and I've always kinda wanted to go back in time and root for him to defeat "the thing".We all struggle with some issues as humans in this world. Though it sounds cliche, its a fact that in the long run they can make us a better, stronger person. Steve Blass does a great job of putting his personal story in writing for the world. And a great suprise near the end of the book to find out that he actually did defeat "the thing" just a few years ago.Any Pirate fan or just any baseball fan would enjoy this book. Its now time for the Pirates to defeat their franchise's demons from the last 20 years. LETS GO BUCS!!

If you have played Magic: The Gathering (MtG) at all, then do not waste your time. I am coming back to the game after 15+ years away in hopes of learning some of the new goodness that has developed since then. These books did not tell me anything that I did not know from my first time playing. And I read the whole thing in about 30 minutes.

I got to say I was disappointed. I was expecting a Much larger book with more in depth reading and information. This book is like 86 pages in amazingly huge print. For the amount of money that was spent for this book defiantly ripped off. Your giving magic a bad name by doing this. Donâ€™t buy it! Itâ€™s not worth the money! You can find all this info for free on Magicâ€™s website!

I received it and was extremely disappointed. I didn't even bother reading it. I have a tattered copy of the rules that goes back to the conception of magic that is way more informative then this book. I should have read the reviews before purchasing this and now I am out $8.00 to return it.

i expected this book to be more in depth and bigger than the thin comic book-sized book that i received...paid way to much for it, so sent it back. seller was prompt with giving me a full refund though, so it's a plus knowing that they honored that.

I just picked up this book on the kindle Eshop for $5 and I will say I got my moneyâ€™s worth. I have only been playing magic for a few days and I wanted some point of ref and this book did a good job. I recommended for beginners like me. Or any one else wanting a quick refresher on magic

Not written very well and multiple grammatical errors through out. A good book for learning the basics of magic I do recommend it for new players. Price of 28$ is a tad steep for such a thin book. 13$ would be a good price.

About the Author

Michel Crouhy, Ph.D., is senior vice president, Global Analytics, Risk Management Division at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), where he is in charge of market and credit risk analytics. He has published extensively in academic journals, is currently associate editor of both Journal of Derivatives and Journal of Banking and Finance, and is on the editorial board of Journal of Risk. Dan Galai, Ph.D., is the Abe Gray Professor of Finance and Business Administration at the Hebrew University and a principal of Sigma P.C.M. Dr. Galai has consulted for the Chicago Board Options Exchange and the American Stock Exchange and published numerous articles in leading journals. He was the winner of the First Annual Pomeranze Prize for excellence in options research presented by the CBOE. Robert Mark, Ph.D., is senior executive vice president at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Dr. Mark is the chief risk officer at CIBC and is a member of the senior executive team of the bank. In 1998, he was named Financial Risk Manager of the Year by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP).

This is an encyclopedia, and reading such things is not what most people, even when deeply interested in the subject are likely to do. It does provide a fair reference for specific topics, but this is not a subject one can really pick and choose.VAR is the ususal starting point, and its famous authors (one of whom I hired for his skill in these matters) cover most of the bases in an interesting way.

This is by far the most comprehensive and well-written book on risk management. If you were to read only on book on the subject, there is no doubt you should choose Crouhy, Galai, Mark. The book reflects not only the authors' serious academic background - all of them have been professors at top universities - but also their detailed hands-on experience.

I think it the best book about Risk management I read so far. I was impressed even by the way they treat market risk although it does not seem their main interest. The chapter on VaR is much better than a whole book on it. Great!!! Everyone should have a copy...

I bought this book because some readers highly recommended it. I'm a financial derivatives strategist and risk management consultant. When a reviewed the book I disappointed in five main particular points: 1) The chapter on VaR is unsatisfactory and insufficient. The authors discuss this subject in a general approach. From my view point I have a preference for Jorion's Value At Risk. 2) There is no discussion about GARCH models, which decrease the importance of this book. I recognise "Risk Management" is a great book. It's a vast encyclopaedia of risk. 3) There's a great discussion of all types of risk, but without any practical solved case. This particular point demerit the seriousness and greatness of the book. 4) The level of mathematics in the book is a little advanced and without any support en practical cases, these poor numerical exercises and calculus tools are useless. 5) Montecarlo simulation approach is bad. There is a great discussion on this subject in Hull's Options, Futures and other derivatives, where the theme is practical, objective and concise. Finally and taking into account these five particular disadvantages, I'll give my rating to this book: 3 stars.

This book is the most comprehensive treatment I've seen of financial risk management, particularly from a banking perspective. It covers both the regulatory and practitioner perspectives of modern risk management -- it's a veritable encyclopedia.It's drawn from the wealth of experience of the authors, who are well known in both the academic world and on Wall St.I guess what I like most about the book is the inside look it provides at the various aspects of financial risks -- no other book does it better, and I found the discussion enthralling.While mainly geared toward banks, the book also includes a fascinating chapter on risk management in regular corporations. I think the book would serve equally well as a textbook for a risk management course or a handbook for the risk management practitioner.

This book is a most systematic and comprehensive overview of modern financial risk management with an emphasis on banking. It is an encyclopedia of risk, including both regulatory and practitioner viewpoints. The book is based on the rich experience of the team of authors, who are well known in both the academic world and Wall Street. It provides an inside look at many aspects of financial risks including market, credit, liquidity and operational risks. The book is mainly oriented toward banks, but it also includes a very interesting chapter on risk management in nonbank corporations. The book is well suited to be a textbook for a course as well as a handbook for a market professional. Very interesting and highly recommended.

I work in the area of Risk Management for over 8 years and I find this book still covers a lot of what someone in the area needs to know. I think it is rather a reference book, better written than the Bessis book on RM in banking and covering more things on Credit Risk, but still ... it is not a book one can read from start to end. It is good to keep on the shelf and read a chapter on a specific topic when necessary.
