I really liked the characters in this book, I looked forward to reading the book each evening, and I'm still thinking about the characters, so gave this book five stars. At first I was a bit disappointed in the beginning of the book because I felt Sarah's character could have been fleshed out more so we could get to know her better, and almost felt more pages could have been added to the book to enrich the storyline, however, the book only got better and better, and I loved it by the end. I didn't realize that this was based on Grace's real life story, and now knowing that, I feel it explains why it was written in the structure it was. I found myself studying Grace's real life story after finishing the book, and that's thanks to this author bringing this very interesting story to us. Hazel Gaynor's book, "A Memory of Violets" is one of the best books I ever read; she is definitely an author I admire.

I am a big fan of lighthouses, and I have read a biography of Ida Lewis. To see her connected (even though just ficticiously) with another true heroine, Grace Darling, was a huge trigger for me to read Gaynor’s novel. It’s not just a story about life-saving female lighthouse keepers, it’s much more a story about mother-daughter relationships and therefore deeply touching. Over the centuries, history has changed the role of women in society, and this becomes obvious also in these relationships. From the rough Scottish coast via Ireland to the coast of Rhode Island, USA, the story connects women who could have been our mothers and grandmothers and makes us ponder about duty and love and how we sometimes have to make lifechanging decisions between them.

I enjoy Hazel Gaynor's books as I always feel they are history lessons for the readers, and this one is no different. The story of Grace Darling is fascinating, and it is clear the author researches her topics thoroughly. This is something I appreciate immensely. The issues I had with the book might be minor to some readers, but initially the introduction to so many characters was confusing and it took a bit of reading to keep them all straight (I had to cross check a few times). Also, a pet peeve of mine is the combination of first and third person narratives within books; it's a trend I don't understand because it isn't necessary to tell the story. In my opinion when you have so many characters, and you jump around between timelines, different narratives add to the confusion. Finally, a spoiler - I'm not sure why the author chose to have Matilda share the last name of "Emmerson" with George from the earlier timeline when there was no connection/tie-in to the two characters. Oversight, or maybe initially the author intended her to be related to him? Or perhaps I missed the explanation because I was trying to keep the characters straight. It's still a 4-star book, in my opinion, mainly because Hazel Gaynor wrote it.

Just a great book overall with wonderful characters. I belong to a book club and hadn’t finished the book so purchased the audio version and I have to say it was superb listening to the novel with such a great voice . When i finished listening to the book I started the audio at the beginning of the book that I had started reading on my kindle. Have recommended this to numerous people.

This is another beautifully crafted novel by Hazel Gaynor filled with interesting history of lighthouse keeping and fascinating characters. It bounces back and forth between two centuries with the story settings in both Ireland and America. I loved how it illustrated the challenges that women faced in both times and places, as well as the impact of fame on a personal life. This is definitely one of my favorites reads of this year!

Loved this book, the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because I hated going back and forth between everyone, it got a little confusing at times.

I saw this book on Amazon and thought it might be interesting. It was a very beautifully written story based on a very real historical heroine in Victorian Times, Grace Darling, whose family were lighthouse keepers at Longshore Light on the coast of Norththumberland, England. The author does an amazing job of putting the reader on scene. Her ability to describe the surroundings along with the weather, the sea, the sounds, and the smells provides one an escape into the pages. The other portion of the book which is about a young Irish girl who becomes pregnant, Matilda Emerson, is likewise beautifully crafted fiction and certainly believable. It was common then for families to send away pregnant daughters to avoid scandal, and to make up a cover story. Sending her to a cousin in Newport, Rhode Island whom she doesn’t know with her own buried secrets adds much to the story. Her cousin also works in a lighthouse. While most of the readers are likely women, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This is a tale set in two lighthouses, an ocean and 100 years apart, drawing upon a real-life Victorian heroine, Grace Darling, who in 1838 at the age of 22 was known for her courageous shipwreck rescue of the ‘Forfarshire’ off the Farne Islands on northeast coast of England. The story of the rescue attracted extraordinary attention throughout Britain and made Grace Darling a reluctant heroine who has gone down in British folklore. This story flips between eras of 1830’s Victorian times to 1930’s in Newport, RI linking together generations of women lighthouse keepers. Although I did enjoy this book, I did find it to be rather safe and repetitive particularly in Grace’s aim for less attention to her fame. It did give an interesting history of lighthouses and the people, most usually families, who lived the beautiful but hardening island life. This is my third book written by Hazel Gaynor whom is known for her poignant research to create enjoyable historical fiction.
