I first became involved with the Navigators when I was in the Air Force in 1972. A great group of Christian men and really "discipled" me. One of the constants of their discipleship training was memorizing Scripture. The verses that were specifically chosen and categorized to bring a new convert from milk to meat at an accelerated rate has remained the same all these years. This package is the same set of verses I committed to memory over 40 years ago and they are just as fresh in my heart (Psalm 119:11) and mind (Matthew 22:37) today as they were then. If you are considering a commitment to memorize the spiritually valuable verses of the Christian Bible, this is the best method and product available. It is time tested and has a proven track record since the days when Dawson Trotman, the founder of the Navigators, evangelized service men during World War II preparing them for their eternal home should they not make it back from their battles.
I have just started using this system and so far it has worked as described. Note: the cards are durable. I had the first set of cards in the vinyl packet and the packet was in my pants. I forgot to remove the vinyl packet when I washed the pants. When the wash was done I removed the cards thinking they were ruined but they were not. I dried them and they are still usable, thanks.

I used this many years ago, and realized I needed to start memorizing scripture again, so I am getting it again because I found it very helpful the first time around. I kept the cards for years.
Normally this reviewer deals mainly with book reviews but I felt the need to review this memorization system because of the personal help I received from it. This course is one of the keys to effective discipleship. When I was in the military, I found that the memorization of Scripture was one of the most effective means of growth in personal life and ministry. So the Topical Memory System became part and parcel of my life.So although I advanced in theological studies, I recently realized that I needed to get back to regular intake of Scripture through memorization of verses covering the various aspects of the Christian life.The Topical Memory System includes a workbook with an additional booklet of verses that can be carried in the pocket or purse to profit from spare moments during the day.This system has been adopted by the leadership in our local church and already we can see the difference in lives as we encourage others to do the same.One caveat is that by learning short verses from various parts of the Bible one risks to end up with texts separated from their context. So I encourage embedding the text in its biblical context to avoid this. This is partly done by attaching the verse reference to the verse itself.The course workbook is an invaluable part of the memorization process since it shows how the different verses fit into life by means of explanations and diagrams. This workbook also details the five main divisions of verses into 1) living the new life; 2) proclaiming Christ; 3) relying on God's resources; 4) being Christ's disciple; and 5) growing in Christlikeness.Memorize Scripture and apply it to life and spiritual growth will take place
In order for believers to grow in grace, the memorization of the Scripture is invaluable. Many have tried and failed. But this Navigator's "Topical Memory System" has been time-tested and proven effective.1. It is a "system" -- this is not a collection of random verses without anything to hold onto. But it is structured in Gospel-centered framework. There is a purpose in organization of all these verses, so you will be able to remember AND use them more.2. It is "topical" -- These 60 foundational verses for Christian life is arranged topically (i.e., 5 series consisting 6 topics each): Series (A) Live the New Life, (B) Proclaim Christ (C) Rely on God's resources (D) Be Christ's Disciple (E) Grow in Christlikeness. This could be great for both new and mature believers.3. The product comes with most popular English versions of the Bible: NIV, NASB, KJV, ESV, NKJV, NRSV, NLT, and MSG. Very useful. Remember that older Topical Memory System Package: Hide God's Word in Your Heart does not have some of the newer Bible versions.4. It also comes with study guide to review and practice the memorization. This is excellent, because it brings memorization into useful personal Bible Study. It also provides 2 diagrams to bring series (A) and (B) more impressionable to the mind.5. It also comes with a vinyl pouch to put the memory cards. Outside pocket is transparent so you could conveniently memorize the verse.I've tried The MacArthur Scripture Memory System (others might find it more suitable), but at least for me, it was not as effective as Navigators. If you are serious about memorization, this tool will help you achieve that goal. Highly recommended.
TMS is a GREAT tool. Unfortunately, this had the updated NIV language, which flows poorly in recitation and is not the wording I learned or was teaching my so. NIV tried to be more PC by changing the universal masculine pronouns to be "inclusive" (though if anyone understands English, they would know the words are already inclusive). Anyway, I bought it for my son, who's been learning the 1984 NIV translation, so this creates a problem. I'm trying to track down some 1984 NIV cards now.
