This is a very well written book, that really does an excellent job of summarizing America's railroad history.Very important volume, that describes the entire progression of the American railroad industry from its infancy. That is significant as America took the English invention of railroads and ran with it to great prosperity up though the present.The writer, who comes form England writes clearly and to the point, as well as picking his factual points with finesse.As a former rail industry executive, I think that he does a nicely balanced job of covering both the railway labor and regulatory issues.Finally, the Author does not disappear into the nostalgia for the industry and the rail fan orientation that railroads of the past inhabited some magical place. He writers in an overall balanced style that conveys the majesty and the impact and the pure innovation that made the American Railroad network and industry to best in the world. .

This book is about a lot more than railroading. While delivering on his title, Wolmar also draws together 19th and 20th Century American history; offers a worked example of the industrial lifecycle; and illustrates human-technology interaction. Wolmar is an award-winning British journalist and politician who has authored more than ten books on railroading.Before railroads, distance governed America, especially beyond waterways. Food and materials needed local production, and timely communications were unknown. Beginning in the1830s railroads started a process of linking up America, first locally and ultimately nationally. Financiers and politicians saw railroads as an enabler for settling the country. They arranged huge land grants for railroads, who in turn sold the land to settlers. Railroads actively recruited new emigrants in England and Europe, creating demand for the land. Later, railroads enabled construction of bedroom communities, giving rise to an ongoing real estate boom and suburban sprawl. Wolmar asserts that America could not have developed as it has without railroads and that railroads were and are a driver/magnifier of our national wealth.At first, America fell in love with railroads. As time passed, the railroads matured, became a mainstay that ultimately brought Chesapeake Bay oysters to Kansas City. Railroads created thousands of jobs directly and in related industries. Timely transport and communications extended the reach of federal and state governments and enabled the rise of national businesses. Too, labor relations and strikes became issues as unions organized, seeking better wages and working conditions. A series of high-profile financial scandals, strikes, and railroad disasters soured the romance, and gave rise to the Interstate Commerce Commission’s often misguided regulation, which did much to undermine American railroading.In one interesting thread, the author shows that the enormous carnage and destruction of the American Civil War would not have been possible without railroads to quickly move armies, munitions, and supplies over relatively long distances. The Union’s superior railroad networks and expertise were key to winning the war. The Confederacy’s preference for states’ rights and fear of national government limited the South’s railroad development and ability to fight as an integrated force.Another theme illustrates employment shifts in emerging industrial infrastructures. Initially, many functions were human centered, but as jobs were automated, the need for human labor declined. This pattern seems apparent in many other contemporary businesses, and managing the conflict between rising productivity and potential human labor dislocations remains a significant social problem.Wolmar convinces me that much of what we love and hate about America started in railroading. Being a retired Locomotive Engineer I found the book and the history it unfolded, added greatly to my understanding of how the railroads grew in relationship to the message of the United States. It opened up reasons, difficult encounters with a vast piece of land, struggles to meet challenges never before envisioned, and personal, not always good reasons, but selfish ambitions to make the most money out of a government project. Like any other things in life, sometimes the overall result accomplishes a result, which was not intended, but certainly benefits many. By their stick-to-it ambition, later people are the recipients of their laboratory.

Bought this for my grandfather's Christmas gift. He's retired from the railroad & stopped opening the rest of his gifts once he opened this and started reading it.

The author is a Brit, and there were times when this viewpoint was an asset in the book and some times a weakness. I wish he had included more about the railroad experience of countries other than the United Kingdom.A person cannot understand American history after 1800 without knowledge of the railroads. I'm glad I read this fine book.

No doubting this is a fun read. I read it in 1 sitting (I take weeks to read anything). I really loved the way Owen opened a world to the Municipalist we meet - freeing him from the constraints of a disordered world he thinks he can control. As they say, we make plans and God laughs.Yes it’s a page turner, entertaining and fun. If you leave it at that you miss what it means for our society, the widening gap between cities and countryside, polarization, how to fix it, how those fixes can go wrong - what to do if you’re caught in this machine. We see two approaches, to tighten the grip further or to become nihilists... which is the answer? Is either the cure? Is there a solution?If you want a fun read this is it. Just like a city from far off, it looks like a clean breezy skyline. Analyze the material and it’s implications and you find a multilayered, gritty, thoughtful commentary on our modern life.

Searching for Kirkland. Yep. Henry and Owen, the oddest couple of all odd couples, find themselves looking for Terrence Kirkland, the director of Metropolis, who has gone missing. Things have gone wild in Metropolis and they shortly find themselves up against...what exactly? This is one where there's an alternate reality where Owen, who is AI, is as much a detective, as Henry, a boring man who really isn't a detective at all. The early part of this is about world building (I found this interesting but realize others might not), the later part is a thriller. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. It's hard to describe, hard to review, but fun to read.

Bureaucratic policy might not seem like an exciting topic for a novel, but Seth Fried’s debut technothriller centers around just that. And, The Municipalists is a riveting read full of wisecracks, classic movie references, sassy computers, and fedoras. (Machine guns and grenades and a smattering of domestic terrorism make an appearance, too.) Light in tone but carrying a surprisingly heavy message about the relationship between institutions and progress, it has some stylistic flaws but ably entertains in spite of them.In an alternate America where cities can sprawl to 35 million residents, The Municipalists follows the escapades of a government employee at the United States Municipal Survey. With such high levels of urbanization, the USMS is a key part of bureaucratic administration. However, when a series of attacks on the agency occur, Henry Thompson, a morose, rigid automaton, is sent to the city of Metropolis to investigate. Accompanying him is a fellow-agent, with a penchant toward snark and alcoholism. The twist? That agent is OWEN, a supercomputer made alive through holographic projection. As they attempt to find the source of the disruptions, they pair tumbles from predicament to predicament, relying on the combination of OWEN’s intelligence and confidence, and Henry’s commitment to the agency and to organization, to pull them through. The plot is fast-paced, but the real highlight of the book is the relationship between Henry and OWEN. Their complimentary characteristics and mutual eccentricities take The Municipalists from a somewhat-predictable storyline to a book with heartfelt human (/nonhuman) interest.I certainly enjoyed The Municipalists; however, there were a couple of areas in which it left me a little bit wanting. In retrospect, I think I liked the concept more than I liked the way in which it was executed. The plot was fast-paced, which is good for a book with a lot of action. Still, at times the transitions between scenes of action felt disjointed, as if there was not enough of a lull between them, and sometimes left me trying to figure out how Henry and OWEN got from one point to another. In addition, there were a couple of other stylistic moves that Fried made that gave the book a truncated feel. There is a lot of very witty banter between the two protagonists, but many of OWEN’s comments are in indirect quotes. That is, instead of giving OWEN’s words directly as he said them, in quotation marks, Fried frequently has Henry summarize what OWEN said or did, which removes the reader a bit from the immediate action. Finally, the end of the book also felt like it could have used more space. No spoilers, but Henry undergoes some personality and lifestyle transitions that could have used more of a lead-up and more exploration, particularly because they relate so closely to the ultimate message the book very explicitly makes. But all of that is in the very last chapter, and so it feels like an abrupt acceleration and then braking.Overall, it almost felt like a book that had been edited down too much. I would have liked the author to dwell longer on transitions between scenes, to give fuller dialogue (particularly because the dynamic between Henry and OWEN is great), and to spend longer wrapping up the plot in order to make Henry’s character development more organic. Basically, I wanted a longer book. Bhikkhu Bodhi is a very intelligent and yet accessible scholar. This book is comprised mainly of short two to four page articles but their brevity belies their depth. A great and informative read that I will revisit often. I'm glad I have this on my shelf.

This wonderful collection of essays was a mailing from the Buddhist Publication Society, last year. I read it almost as soon as it arrived. I cannot say enough positive regarding the content.

My son is a voracious reader. We got him 7 of the Basher Science books for his 8th birthday in late March. He had finished them all by the end of April and has picked them back up again to reread. (2nd grade, reading at a U-level) He won't touch a fiction book unless forced, but if it is about science or technology he can't put it down. Just enough pictures to keep him from feeling intimidated by the text, perfect silliness level to keep him engaged, and more real science facts than he could absorb the first time through.

We started with Basher Science's Periodic Table book and have been reading an element each night to our 4 yr old at bed time. Some of the facts are over his head, but the illustrations are fun and the text is interesting enough to keep him engaged. He even has a favorite element, thanks to the book. As science nerds, my husband and I are so thankful to have found this series of books. And, as we recently found out, there are games and science toys, too! Highly recommend for either a teacher looking for a new way to connect with students, or a parent who wants to make science fun and approachable for you kids.

I wish I had had this book in high school! While it doesn't tell you how to solve equations it does make memorizing different terms a lot easier by giving them character that helps explain what they do and why they're important. Perfect for my budding scientist and great to pull from to teach beginning chemistry!

This review applies to MOST of the Basher books as they all seem to share the same mix of excellence and failure.First, these books are GREAT in that they present some of the terminology/jargon of the subject matter in a way that seems to interest small children! (in my experience, ages 4-7 seems about right) This is actually a BIG DEAL, as the books reliably deal in wonderfully important subjects. For this, I highly recommend them and thank the authors and publishers for their effort!However... there are two ways in which I find these books to be terribly disappointing:1) The attempts to make each entry clever and fun raise the effective reading level high above the target audience. Clever puns and delightfully descriptive diatribes do not go over so well with young children just beginning to read. My six year old is completely ready for the subject matter, but struggles to the point of giving up (!!) trying to manage the prose.2) IMHO, the attempts at fun language and clever characterizations often work to obscure the simplicity of the subject matter at hand. As a scientist who understands many of the concepts under discussion, I often find myself marveling at how these descriptions express an opaque and incomprehensible version of what are fundamentally simple ideas.*sigh*Basher Guys... I LOVE what you are trying to do. IMHO, if you can find a way to simplify the prose, and not let "characterizations" get in the way of "simple explanations", then you will be changing the WORLD!!So despite my reservations... BUY THESE BOOKS!... I think that as long as they use it to try to do better, these guys have TOTALLY earned our income!!

Bought a few of the Basher books at a library fair not knowing what they were but was intrigued by the graphics and succint yet accurate teachings. My 7 year old loves science and LOVES these books. His reading is pretty advanced for his age and he can read these on his own asking for help with the bigger scientific terms. I think younger readers would still enjoy but would need parental co-reading to be able to tackle them. We have ordered 4 more!

The Basher Science series goes with a homeschool curriculum we use. I'm not a fan. The author tries so hard to be snarky and funny you lose the focus on actual content and they're just confusing and sometimes borderline inappropriate for the level for whom they are written.

These Basher Science books are super great for a classroom library. I teach 4th graders, they love the half dozen or so of these books that we have. I do a little preview and the kids are hooked! Gotta love it when they don't realize they are even learning.

My 4th grader loved these books...but so did my 6th grader and a friend who is in high school. Even the college kid from next door thought they were a great idea. These books are genius way of explaining more difficult concepts easily, they help the student to remember them easily because of these cute n silly pictures. Some come with posters, just depends which book, I guess. Some of the books in this series are longer, (much longer), than others.
