Kindle Unlimited, liked it, the pictures were stunning, could not really get in to it with the lack of chapter/other breaks on my kindle app with the audio so had to sight read it which hardly ever do, but the most of the photos were quite lovely. Interesting, just a bit confusing in couple or so places, but definitely an interesting book.

This excellent book will motivate you to get out and travel for as long as you possibly can. It is one of the best books I have read in the last decade, and trust me, I read a lot.While I loved the entire book, my favorite section was the last one on how and why all of us are already being world citizens. I found the arguments extremely compelling. I loved the following: “There is no real conflict between nationalism and globalism. On the contrary: It is to the extent that a nation becomes more global in its achievements that it becomes admirable.” What a simple yet profound idea, that I had never thought about! I wish all nationalists would read it. By the way, the author has nothing against nationalism.The book is mostly philosophical in nature, yet it is not Kant or Heidegger. It is practical philosophy in the style of the Stoics which seem to have had an influence on the writer (who by the way is from Cyprus, the birthplace of Zeno who founded Stoicism). There are chapters such as how to balance freedom and discipline while you travel, how to deal with beggars and other unpleasant realities in many countries, what mindset to have, how to go about thinking of your journey and creating a wise line of exploration, what are the most important transformative experiences a long-term traveler is most likely to have, and much-much more.The book is actually composed of three elements: the main text, travel stories (mostly with a philosophical flavor), and very beautiful photos from his journey. All these elements have been blended masterfully, and I have to say this is a very well designed book and on excellent paper, well-bound, that is a pleasure to hold in your hand – not many books so meticulously designed nowadays (congratulations on this Nicos!). From the travel stories my favorites were "Legs and Arms" (worth buying the book for just this very profound essay!), "The Merchant and the Musician", "Huichilopochtli" (about his imagining the Maya universe while in a museum in Mexico City), "Higher Perfection" (about how he experienced perfection in imperfection at a French restaurant), and, of course, "Universal Brotherhood." Wonderful little vignettes that one may return to many times.The photos are really great and are often related to the text, so you can jump from the stories to the text and then the photos. The two addenda in the end are also great, since they give practical advice to the aspiring long-term traveler.On the style of writing: Nicos writes in two styles. In the main text he uses a more philosophical and impersonal language that befits its subject matter. I found his writing to be very clear, very deep and pleasant. It takes some time to get used to it, especially if you only read novels and bestsellers, but once you do it flows beautifully. The stories have a more personal character, although he does not manage to get rid of his philosophical style completely in these either. Nicos delves deep even in the most simple of situations and squeezes out of every experience the teaching it has to offer – the "Higher Perfection" story is an excellent example of such a squeezing.On a final note, I have to admit that after reading the book I have subscribed to his "Tuesday Letters" blog and that I enjoy all of his philosophical writings that deal with our everyday life as well as with the big existential questions.

Mostly written by Caesar, this book provides an insightful view of ancient warfare from a general's perspective, including such topics as the siege, infantry/calvary interaction, the value of enemy awareness, military engineering, intelligence, moral building, calculated risk, and so on. It also describes such topics as the ancient use of the defeated providing hostages, the temperament of the Celtic tribes, the competition for the areas west of the Rhine (Gaul), the lifestyles and state of civilization of the Germanic tribes (this may be the first recorded account of the Germans), and political strategies.Note that Caesar writes in the third person, which almost makes it seem like it was written by an impartial historian (which is obviously not the case... Hence, its accuracy must be questioned to some degree).The only downside of this book is its translation, which I compare to reading an old version of the bible. Sentences run very long, paragraphs cover entire pages, verbs are placed in odd parts of sentences,.. etc. It takes a while to get through it. It is, however, worth the effort, and is a interesting window into the past.

Same as "The Commentaries Of Caesar" In hardback. The hardback will be a backup copy in case this one gets frayed!! I was always a big Roman history buff!! I'll enjoy reading this in text form like I did in comic book form in "Classics Illustrated" Ariovistus, Vercingetorix, can't forget names like these!!

I am not learned in Latin but the translation did not flow in English. The tenses changed so suddenly and inappropriately that I suspect the translator of being too literal and the end result was difficult to read in English. It gave the impression of one step above a computer translation. I can't imagine Caesar and his scribes being so crude.I must read another edition before I have an opinion on the book-it was difficult and tedious to read. Maps would have been helpful.

I liked the translation--it brought Caesar's style to life. It also seemed to me that the section completed by Caesar's associate was distinct in style, which again made Caesar's more vivid. Be warned, though, that there is absolutely no commentary, which for me was problematic, as it the work clearly has its propaganda elements, and it would be nice to know exactly how much of a stretch some representations are. But for those looking for a straight translation, it's a nice choice.

Writing was like a legal document. He was a very intelligent and courageous man but after a while the battles wear thin.

I purchased this as a gift and found this to be the better edition currently available. Initially I purhcased the Kessinger Publishing Edition. I found the print in that edition to be very muddy and the overall presetation not as clean (huge margins which crowded the text). This edition is clean and easy to read.

The copy of Caesar's Commentaries was in first rate condition as advertised. I was quite pleased with the quality of my purchase.

This book provides a good overview of Russia, it's history, and culture. Of course a book that size can't be comprehensive and there were places we visited that weren't covered, but overall it was useful. If you are traveling to a weight limit, I suggest reading the introductory material before departure and photocopying a few relevant location-specific pages to take with you.

DK is amazing at describing countries in its entirety. I learned a lot before travelling to Russia and I used the book while touring the country. The book is full of amazing pictures, history, geography and travel tips,. Excellent buy!

Excellent,brief descriptions of all the main sites of Western Russia.More than adequate for most readers on Moscow and St Petersburg in a single volume.As always with DK Eyewitness guides the three dimensional pictures of major buildings make these guides amongst the best.

While I am a big fan of DK Eyewitness Travel series, this book utterly disappoints. The introduction starts full of propaganda stamps: "mafia-state", "petrodollars", "towns and villages languished in poverty". The "history" part, well, you guess it, nothing but "gulag" and "dissidents". But then, who reads this part anyway, right? On to the travel pages:3/4 of the book is dedicated to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Which leaves only about 60 pages for the rest of the country. Which makes one wonder, why even bother to publish this book, when there are separate guides for both of these cities.So, let's review these 60 pages. Russia, after all, has 25 beautiful UNESCO World Heritage sites, so there should be enough to get a traveler busy.The magnificent Solovetsky islands? Nope, not there. Ferrapontov Monastery in Vologda? Ancient city of Derbent? Not even a mention.The famous Golden Ring of Russia? Four of the 13 cities have made it into the book. Suzdal got lucky, but not Rostov Velikiy, Kostroma or Ivanovo.Medieval fortresses of Vyborg, Izborsk or Shlisselburg? Town and Fortress of Kronstadt? Imperial palaces of Oranienbaum, Strelna or Gatchina? Neither was worth even a single sentence. And yes, most of these are included into UNESCO World Heritage sites list.Lena Pillars Nature Park (another World Heritage site)? Not there. Neither is Yakutsk. So, if you are planning to take one of the popular Lena river cruises, or visit the Pole of Cold - choose another book.So, what is there, what has made the list of sights a regular tourist wants to see in Russia?- White Sea Canal - a former Gulag site- Perm36 - another former Gulag site- Magadan - well, you guessed it- Stalin's Bunker in Samara - it actually has more information dedicated to it, than some of the country's finest art museumsSo, I would only recommend this book if you vie to get your head loaded with the Cold War era propaganda. If you are just a tourist who wants to marvel at the beautiful churches of Rostov, museums of Gatchina or natural monuments on Lena river - look for an actual travel guide.

Marked in Ink: A Tattoo Coloring Book by Megan Massacre is a lovely edition to adult coloring books! The cover art sold me instantly & was super thrilled to discover the same image on the inside waiting for me to add my own creativity to! I don't have any tattoos but I have always admired the incredible artwork that goes into them. This book is full of wonderful pieces of Megan's unique style.. There are sugar skulls, mermaids, owls, plus lots of other whimsical pages. Even if you are not a fan of tattoos, you will be pleasantly surprised by this coloring book. It's perfect for anyone who enjoys coloring beautiful artwork. You won't be disappointed.I received this book from Blogging for Book for my honest review.

I'm absolutely in love with this book! Fast shipping great quality.... I just wish coloring books would come Spiral bound!!! I went and had Office Depot spiral bound & it made this book that much better!!

If you like her tattoos, you should love this coloring book. Great pictures and designs. Very nice, smooth, heavy paper that should be able to take any kind of markers or pens. I've used gel pens and colored pencils so far on it and both looked great.And last but not least, the pages are perforated. I like taking pages out of book to color on a flatter surface, and the perforations make that easy.Definitely my favorite of our coloring book collection!

It's not something I'm used to coloring in, but I love it. I love Megan's work, I love her art, and I love how it pulls me out of what I'm used to coloring in.My best friend and sister wants one as well, and I can't wait for them to join in on the fun!!!!!!!!

Wonderful pictures. Printed on one side of each page and perforated for easy removal. The paper is good quality but markers will bleed through.

I love Megan massacre and have watched her since the start. She does amazing work. This coloring book is a awesome strew reducer and anxiety shifter. The pictures are bold and made for your imagination to run wild.

This tattoo artist is amazing. Her designs make you stop and think before you just start coloring. I actually picked out my colors for everything before I even began. I highly recommend this book.

I'm still on Chapter Four, and I'm glad I have the book, but.....1) There is a web site associated with the book (Kindel edition), and it's supposed to contain snippets for all the code examples. Not all the examples are, in fact, there, but more important...2) One of the very first examples is actually wrong - using a function get_with_header() when the sample output clearly had to be dervied by using http_header() - which gets only the header. If you're a complete beginner, this could cause you endless grief. And maybe it's the only bad example, but it's worth noting.3) Neither the book nor the website spends much effort at helping you get a PHP environment set up. Other than ht eauthor referring you to php.net, you're on your own. And if you successfully navigate to a place from which you can download PHP, the array of choices is quite daunting - unless you're already an expert, in which case some of the book would be redundant. I've got 45 years of programming under my belt, and I did the installation OK; but a nice, simple set of hints as to which flavor of PHP to download, and which lines in php.ini to change in order to enable the features the book relies on would have been nice.4) That having been said, I disagree with some of the other reviewers as to the value of the custom libraries that the book relies on. The raw PHP/cURL has a daunting set of features, flags, and options. The libraries provide a much more learner-friendly interface - a way to get the concepts without being overwhelmed by things that can be safely ignored. If PHP/cURL is particle physics, this book's libraries are Newtonian - more than good enough to learn why apples fall on your head.I'll update this review when I've finished the book.

Found a few mistakes in the code provided by the author, like closing delimiters and code that doesn't work. But apart from simple code typos there are also bigger errors which required more troubleshooting. I was following along with the code provided, but after running into PHP errors you kind of give up and stop trusting the code in the book. Another frustrating bit is that code examples for things like "Price scraping scripts" etc come in chunks. Would be nice if the author linked directly to the code examples and not reference "Go to book web-site", for example finding the example store wasn't easy..With that said I found the book to be very useful, the author shares very useful information and can save a newbie scraper hours of head scratching. The code library is also very useful. I hope the author comes out with a 3rd addition that's error free.Author also provides plenty of example code which is a very nice touch. You get to see the inner workings of web spiders. Overall it's a book worth reading.

Most bad reviews here are from people who already have some sort of understanding of cURL and are disappointed that this book didn't help in mastering their existing knowledge.I had never heard of cURL at the time I purchased this book, and was a slave to the web browser "OK" button. I did however have experience in applications programming with C, C++ and Java as standalone, non-networked applications, along with very limited JSP and servlet knowledge. For me it was obvious that I could write a script that accessed files over a network. Any network! If an application or browser can ... enough said.What this book is all about is letting people (who think that the "Internet lives inside a web browser") know that there is more. It's informing those bound by web browsers to gather information on the www that there is another way. A way that can be automated without you having to click a button every step of the way. If this is news to you, then this book was written to let you know and give you some ideas of things you can do. I hadn't previously heard of cURL, but the idea was not foreign. I just wanted to find out how it was done. What I learned from this book can be summarised in one word (actually an acronym) "cURL". I did the first exercise in the book just to see it work and now the book sits on the shelf and has never been touched since. Was I disappointed? YES!!!!But why is this a good book? It's not written for experienced coders or command line buffs. It is written to open a world to those who didn't know about web automation, or have heard of it and want to get a start. The title is very deceptive for someone who has developed web applications before. I don't think intentionally either, as the tone of the book and the authors discussions aren't directed towards an audience of programmers. The real value of the book is introducing web automation as an alternative to relentlessly click buttons in a browser.Maybe the title should be "Webbots, Spiders, and Screen Scrapers: An Introduction to automated web activities using PHP & cURL". This may better elude to the level and intention of the book. You can use this book with no programming experience, only a little initiative to pick it up along the way. Obviously PHP knowledge gets you a long way and if you already know cURL there's not much in this book for you outside of a few pieces of advice that are not coding related. Things like making you think about how your activities are recorded in a server's log.If you are new to programming and wish your computer could automatically do some mundane web stuff you're sick of clicking on all the time ... read the book, that world exists.If you are a confident programmer and your imagination bugs you constantly to get your computer to do all of your work ... "cURL".If you already know something about web automation ... use your imagination.

One of those books that becomes more useful the more you read it! I mean that as a compliment!

I have been doing some webscraping for over 2 years and I found the content outdated and very simple. I would have included some reference to captchas. The examples use Windows OS, which must probably most webbot developers wouldnt use.He could also include Selenium instead of macros, overall I found outdated and suited for more beginners in the domain.

During those same years the United States military forces have engaged in more than two hundred armed conflicts. It is not a new thing, Wikipedia says: 'The first United States military action overseas, executed by the U.S. Marines and Navy, was the storming of Derna, Tripoli in 1805 in an effort to bolster diplomatic efforts in securing both the freedom of American prisoners and an end to piracy on the part of the Barbary state. The opening line of the Marine's Hymn, From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, refers to this action.'This is a very interesting book in how it looks at the conflicts fought since World War II. It covers not the conflict itself so much the interaction between the President and Congress. It further raises interesting questions about how Congress acts in these cases. For instance in the vote regarding Iraq, Congress voted 77 to 23 in favor of the Iraq war.With the current dissatisfaction regarding Iraq, it will be very interesting to see what happens, especially if the Democrats gain control of Congress.
