Bhikkhu Bodhi is a very intelligent and yet accessible scholar. This book is comprised mainly of short two to four page articles but their brevity belies their depth. A great and informative read that I will revisit often. I'm glad I have this on my shelf.

This wonderful collection of essays was a mailing from the Buddhist Publication Society, last year. I read it almost as soon as it arrived. I cannot say enough positive regarding the content.

The individual concepts are each introduced over a spread that features a computer-generated cartoon of a character representing the idea and a brief introduction to its characteristics and personality. Math follows a similar format, but without an introduction. Chapters include, among others: “Number Bunch” (zero, infinity, etc.), “Special Sum-Things” (add, subtract, etc.), and “Shape Shifters” (line, angle, etc.). In both books, the information is presented in a chatty, first-person voice. For example, “Acid” announces: “The most notorious of the Nasty Boys. I'm mad, bad, and thoroughly dangerous to know. My son is a voracious reader. We got him 7 of the Basher Science books for his 8th birthday in late March. He had finished them all by the end of April and has picked them back up again to reread. (2nd grade, reading at a U-level) He won't touch a fiction book unless forced, but if it is about science or technology he can't put it down. Just enough pictures to keep him from feeling intimidated by the text, perfect silliness level to keep him engaged, and more real science facts than he could absorb the first time through.

We started with Basher Science's Periodic Table book and have been reading an element each night to our 4 yr old at bed time. Some of the facts are over his head, but the illustrations are fun and the text is interesting enough to keep him engaged. He even has a favorite element, thanks to the book. As science nerds, my husband and I are so thankful to have found this series of books. And, as we recently found out, there are games and science toys, too! Highly recommend for either a teacher looking for a new way to connect with students, or a parent who wants to make science fun and approachable for you kids.

I wish I had had this book in high school! While it doesn't tell you how to solve equations it does make memorizing different terms a lot easier by giving them character that helps explain what they do and why they're important. Perfect for my budding scientist and great to pull from to teach beginning chemistry!

This review applies to MOST of the Basher books as they all seem to share the same mix of excellence and failure.First, these books are GREAT in that they present some of the terminology/jargon of the subject matter in a way that seems to interest small children! (in my experience, ages 4-7 seems about right) This is actually a BIG DEAL, as the books reliably deal in wonderfully important subjects. For this, I highly recommend them and thank the authors and publishers for their effort!However... there are two ways in which I find these books to be terribly disappointing:1) The attempts to make each entry clever and fun raise the effective reading level high above the target audience. Clever puns and delightfully descriptive diatribes do not go over so well with young children just beginning to read. My six year old is completely ready for the subject matter, but struggles to the point of giving up (!!) trying to manage the prose.2) IMHO, the attempts at fun language and clever characterizations often work to obscure the simplicity of the subject matter at hand. As a scientist who understands many of the concepts under discussion, I often find myself marveling at how these descriptions express an opaque and incomprehensible version of what are fundamentally simple ideas.*sigh*Basher Guys... I LOVE what you are trying to do. IMHO, if you can find a way to simplify the prose, and not let "characterizations" get in the way of "simple explanations", then you will be changing the WORLD!!So despite my reservations... BUY THESE BOOKS!... I think that as long as they use it to try to do better, these guys have TOTALLY earned our income!!

Bought a few of the Basher books at a library fair not knowing what they were but was intrigued by the graphics and succint yet accurate teachings. My 7 year old loves science and LOVES these books. His reading is pretty advanced for his age and he can read these on his own asking for help with the bigger scientific terms. I think younger readers would still enjoy but would need parental co-reading to be able to tackle them. We have ordered 4 more!

The Basher Science series goes with a homeschool curriculum we use. I'm not a fan. The author tries so hard to be snarky and funny you lose the focus on actual content and they're just confusing and sometimes borderline inappropriate for the level for whom they are written.

These Basher Science books are super great for a classroom library. I teach 4th graders, they love the half dozen or so of these books that we have. I do a little preview and the kids are hooked! Gotta love it when they don't realize they are even learning.

My 4th grader loved these books...but so did my 6th grader and a friend who is in high school. Even the college kid from next door thought they were a great idea. These books are genius way of explaining more difficult concepts easily, they help the student to remember them easily because of these cute n silly pictures. Some come with posters, just depends which book, I guess. Some of the books in this series are longer, (much longer), than others.

Tremper Longman III is Distinguished Scholar of Biblical Studies and Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. Longman is no stranger to the world of ancient wisdom literature. He received a PhD in Ancient Near Eastern Studies from Yale University and has authored numerous related books and articles, including widely used commentaries on Proverbs, Job, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, and Psalms. Most recently, Longman has brought together his over three decades of reflection and academic rigor on biblical wisdom into a theological introduction that synchronically traces the theme both inside and out of the Old Testament.The Fear of the Lord is Wisdom: A Theological Introduction to Wisdom in Israel establishes the genre of wisdom literature as more than mere practical or ethical sayings that arose amid cultural challenges of the ancient world. Longman meticulously surveys the literature and demonstrates a consistent and coherent theological category that threads the redemptive-historical narrative. It is a thrilling and comprehensive study that does much to add value to the genre for contemporary audiences.Longman divides the book into five parts: (1) the heart of wisdom: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job, (2) wisdom elsewhere in the Old Testament (Deuteronomy, Psalms, Song of Songs, etc.), (3) Israel’s wisdom: cosmopolitan or unique?, (4) further refining our understanding of wisdom, and (5) the afterlife of Israel’s wisdom (Apocrypha, Dead Sea Scrolls, and New Testament). As Longman opens The Fear of the Lord is Wisdom, a survey of the most forward presenting Old Testament wisdom books commence with the establishment of a theological foundation— “that the fear of the Lord is the proper response to God’s wisdom . . . [and] is fundamentally the result of a relationship with God” (p. 62). Longman does acknowledge the practical and ethical side of wisdom as a theme in these books, but uses the section to uncover the theological emphasis that undergirds each of them for the forthcoming pages.In part two, Longman carefully looks at wisdom observable elsewhere in the Old Testament. For Longman, this does not necessarily mean that such should be considered as “wisdom” literature (see appendix 2), but it does mean that “they contribute to our understanding of the nature of wisdom” (p. 64). The reader is guided through wisdom found in Deuteronomy, Psalms, Song of Songs, and a few prophets. Longman also examines four pivotal Old Testament figures, including Joseph, Daniel, Adam, and Solomon. In part three and four, Longman further establishes his theological premise as he addresses the nature and understanding of wisdom in general. For Longman, the source of true wisdom is God according to the books that speak of wisdom (p. 126). Longman does well to address the consequence of wise and foolish behavior, and helpfully guides readers away from a rigid understanding of retribution theology.Lastly, in part five, Longman engages both the Second Temple period and the New Testament. There is significant continuity demonstrated between the Old Testament and the New, and Longman rightly identifies Jesus as “the epitome of God’s wisdom, or, perhaps better, the very incarnation of God’s wisdom” (p. 256). Thus, much of the theological notions that were found in the wisdom core (part one) are not only present in the New Testament, but they are incarnate. Longman concludes, “the church is called to relationship with him and to inculcate and demonstrate the same fear that is the beginning of wisdom . . . Christians are God-fearers who submit to the instruction of Christ . . . in all of life” (p. 256).Longman has provided a much-needed theological engagement with the wisdom of the Old Testament. I appreciated that Longman sought to balance the practical and ethical aspects of wisdom within an underlying theological framework. Longman has done much to detail and demonstrate the theological significance of biblical wisdom, and thus, has removed the prior misunderstandings concerning its origin and use in ancient Israel. It would have been interesting to see how wisdom penetrates pseudepigraphical works of the Second Temple period, or possibly other noncanoical work subsequent to the New Testament. That said, the comprehensive scope of The Fear of the Lord is Wisdom demonstrates a strange familiarity with biblical wisdom that few scholars apart from Longman could exhibit.The Fear of the Lord is Wisdom: A Theological Introduction to Wisdom in Israel by Tremper Longman III is a fascinating display of biblical theology that uncovers a life-giving aspect of biblical wisdom, bringing a fresh sense of relevance to a seemingly stagnate body of literature. There are few books on the market that provide the level of breadth and depth regarding biblical wisdom as Longman has demonstrated here. Proverbs mentions the Lord, but is it more like a “Confuscious says” kind of idea which anyone can use, even pagans? In his book, Tremper Longman believes that the heart of wisdom is “the fear of the Lord.” Throughout his book, Longman, who has written numerous books and commentaries on wisdom literature, engages in “canonical interpretation” (181). No biblical book is an island, but each is to be interpreted among the rest in the canon. Thus Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job(PEJ) must agree. Even if there are major differences, there is no discord among them. Even more, “the Lord” in Proverbs is the covenantal God of Israel—Yahweh. To fear him is to know him and follow him within a covenantal relationship.Section one looks at PEJ, which, though wisdom literature, have their differences. Yet we must read them together to know God’s teaching about wisdom.Part two looks at wisdom sayings (ch 4) in Deuteronomy, the Psalms, Song of Songs, in the prophetic literature. In (ch 5) Longman views both Joseph’s wise actions in light of PEJ and Daniel’s wisdom in light of Proverbs. Chapter six observes both Adam and Solomon who had wisdom but who instead both chose folly.Part three observes the source of wisdom (ch 7). In chapter eight, God in his wisdom created an ordered cosmos, and the more we discover the more wisdom we gain in living this life as his dependent creatures. Longman sets wisdom literature within its cultural ANE context (ch 9), and examines the relationship between wisdom, law, and covenant (ch 10).In part four, Longman mines Proverbs for a retributive theology (ch 11). Proverbs are not promises, and Job and Ecclesiastes are “offering a corrective to a misreading of Proverbs” (186). Longman then searches to see if there was a group/class of sages or a school of wisdom in Israel (ch 12), and asks how a woman is to read the book of Proverbs which seems directed mostly to males (ch 13).Part five looks at wisdom in the apocryphal books and Dead Sea Scrolls (ch 14) and in the NT writings (ch 15).The book ends with two appendices—(A1) wisdom in the twenty-first century. Longman believes that the Christian counselor is the best example of an OT sage. He or she must know Scripture well and be able to apply it, must have a good relationship with God, and ought to be able to, with practice, insightfully figure people out as they counsel them and then apply God’s real-world wisdom to their lives—practical, ethical, and theological wisdom. A2 asks whether wisdom literature is really its own genre.Recommended?As he notes in his book, the idea of wisdom has been given short shrift for a long time. It’s something that been likened to something stodgy old people or ivory-tower profs have. Instead it is EQ: emotional (and social) intelligence. It is knowing how to live in this world among its people, knowing how to serve them well, and how to survive this life without being ruined (at least by our own foolishness). I was super excited when i got this book. It had lots of beautiful pictures and charts. My favorite ones were the peacock, the raven, the lion(all from the forest tapestry) and the african marigold rug.

This book has several patterns that I plan on attempting in the next few projects. However, when I was considering the purchase of the book, I was unable to find a complete listing of the designs included in the book (always helpful when purchasing something like this). You can find part of the list, along with correspondeing pictures of the designs at the Beth Russell Needlepoint website under "Needlepoint Books." However, in an attempt to help other Amazon-ers, here is a list of the designs:*Peacock*Raven*Lion*African Marigold*Flower Border*Honeysuckle Border*Orange Border*Bees*Arts & Crafts Alphabet*Apples*Vine*Artichoke*Fruit*Kelmscott Frame*Grape (bookmark)*Rose (bookmark)*Tulip*Acanthus & FlowerIf there was any issue I have with the book, it would be that it showcases certain projects that are not in the book (specifically, the dog from her "Forest" collection). Beth Russell did an excellent job in putting together William Harris's designs. I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about needlepoint.

After a trip to Kelmscott Manor, I particularly enjoyed this book both for the lovely, do-able designs and instructions, and for the historical information about William Morris, his family, and the Arts and Crafts movement.

Didn't love this book. These things are very personal, though, and just because it didn't particularly please me doesn't mean someone else wouldn't love these patterns.

The third of Beth Russell's needlepoint books features directions for making her Designer's Forum creations, such as pillows, chair seats, rugs and wall hangings. Her patterns are high quality, sophisticated copies of William Morris' Arts and Crafts designs which she makes easy to follow. She recommends specific, name brand materials, such as canvas and yarn and also illustrates stitch options and further directions for finishing. Her needlepoint kits are estimated to be the finest on the market today and her books offer an inexpensive way to duplicate these products for much less.

One of my favorite publishers for math workbooks for students. I have many of their books and have been consistently pleased with the quality and number of resources they provide. The workbooks include more than enough practice problems for your child to work through during the school year and the book comes along with their online website access. To my knowledge, all of their workbooks come with video explanations on their website. Some instructor reviews question by question making this an essential workbook to have for all parents and teachers. As a parent who has used their books for my kids and continue to do so, I highly recommend this brand.

We actually loved this workbook for 2 main reasons:- Great format that helps the kid better grasp a curriculum. Just one page a day! Love little explanations at the end. They are great when practicing and for review later. Still have to watch the videos.- I loved the problems this workbook offers. On one hand, the workbook covers school curriculum, but at the same time problems are a bit different/trickier than what they do at school. So, the kiddo actually has to think!I only wish pages were detachable to practice on the go. It would be so convenient!

Using this for homeschooling special needs son. I asked our local proctor about the difficulty level and found out this is the minimum standard we expected to complete for the testing.I enjoy the challenge questions. Uses real world problems.

Exactly what I have been looking for! My child has the common core math book that is used at the local elementary schools, but sometimes she finds common core to be frustrating. So, we needed some extra practice for everyday homework routine. This book comes with online video tutoring explanations which I found really helpful when my child got sick and missed a new topic.

Just recently received the book and I like how the book is organized. Can’t wait to start working on it with the boys.

This is great book, very reasonably priced. It is divided into weeks and days, so very easy to follow and stay on the schedule. Overall an excellent addition to the school curriculum, highly recommend.

Also very lie video part that comes with this book. She uses videos if cannot solve something. Will use this company for other grades as well.

The materials align very well with school curriculum. We found it helpful for extra practice at home. Good questions and well presented material. Enough to practice every day.I would recommend staying at current grade level as questions are not as simple as some other workbooks we tried before.
