Anne Keene's THE CLOUDBUSTER NINE is a fascinating and engaging story. Keene tells the tale of the naval aviation training program that took place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina (and four other sites) during World War II. On one level, the book provides a powerful and revealing look at some of the men of the Greatest Generation as they prepared to fight for America's freedom--men like George H. W. Bush and John Glenn. But the book is also a delightful and impressively researched story about some of the major league baseball players--Ted Williams and Johnny Pesky, for example--who trained as pilots and played ball for a team called the Cloudbuster Nine, a squad that played several exhibitions against other major leaguers (Babe Ruth appears in the book as another individual who contributed to the war effort in his own way). Finally, the book is a touching and emotional memoir that relates the experiences of Keene's father, the team's bat boy and later an aspiring minor league pitcher. The book is filled with memorable anecdotes and photographs. I would recommend it to any reader who enjoys World War II history or little-known facts about some of America's great heroes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Cloudbuster Nine. Amazingly researched, Anne Keene's book reads like a novel even though it presents a real life history of an important time in our country. The story goes way beyond Ted Williams and the Chapel Hill fighter pilot baseball team, giving the context of the events from a worldwide historical perspective. Touching personal stories are interspersed throughout the book, which not only draw the reader forward but make it one of the most heartwarming tributes I've read. A must read for baseball lovers, history buffs, and anyone who wants to be transported back to a time of real heroes.

This is a great book! Anne is a terrific writer, hopefully there will be more to come from her. You don’t have to be a sports’ fan to enjoy this book. It is filled with tons of details on pilot training at UNC during WW2. Anne’s terrific account of her Dad’s baseball career and his love of the game is so interesting, heartwarming and at times sad. There are stories about Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, The Babe and so many other stars. I loved “Cloudbuster 9”!

A fun read. Anne Keene tells a story that not many Americans know about. Military and baseball historical buffs will find this work informative and interesting. As a middle aged student of history and baseball in particular" The Cloudbuster Nine" more than satisfies on several levels. This is a work that blends history and a personal family relationship. Major Leaguers like Ted Williams , Johnny Pesky and Johnny Sain are bought to life in different roles than on the diamond. An extensively researched book. All in all a very touching story. It is no doubt that these pilots represented the " Greatest Generation" in a supreme way. But, everyone on the home front pitched in. It is essential that the younger generations of our nation are exposed to the history of this era.

Although I purchased this book to add to those I already own about my childhood idol, I found that it covers a much broader topic in addition to its portraits of Ted, Pesky, and the other players on this team of Naval pilot cadets. Basically, the author is searching for an answer to why her father, who was the team's bat boy,became an embittered and emotionally withdrawn adult despite his lifelong love for baseball. Her discovery of his dusty trunk filled with forgotten photographs became the basis for her research. There are only 45 men alive who played in the major leagues and also served in WWII. She was able to interview a number of these individuals, now in their nineties, and her book will be enjoyed by anyone who treasures baseball history and the history of an America which is rapidly vanishing.

What a well researched, wonderful story. Every American should read and appreciate what the greatest generation sacrificed for us. This book is inspiring.

This book reads so easily and appeals to a wide audience - especially women and mothers of players who appreciate the game of baseball and the example set by those WWII players who paused their careers to serve in the war. A read for several generations.

45 minutes is all it took for me to finally begin sketching my concepts. Yes, that's it. I opened the book during an hour train commute. It looked like a thick book but I was done in 45 minutes. My brain had absorbed and retained concepts and I sketched the take aways for me right away. I love the author laying out the simple patterns - e.g., 5 shapes are all you need to draw.On the ride back I finished the practice sketches. I feel super comfortable sketching out my product concepts. NOW, I know I'm a visual processor and for years have yearned to have a sketch person on-hand on-demand. Now I have him. it's me. If you KNOW you process information this way and just couldn't get started, this quick read can be the change for you!

I've read a few books on conveying ideas through drawing (Back of the Napkin by Dan Roam & Doodle Revolution by Sunni Brown) that were good and full of information, but neither really captured the gravity of using the ideas within to convey the ideas themselves.Throughout the entire book, Mike uses sketchnotes on every page to give the reader a pragmatic, well laid guide for how to take notes visually. He shares examples of other sketctnoters (giving them a platform to be seen and providing real-life examples of other sketchnoters), teaches you the basics of "formatting" your sketchnotes and the basics of drawing, which I've found incredibly helpful for making sure I'm capturing information as fully and clearly as I had hoped.I've gone through this book multiple times, and because of his ability to break the ideas down into digestible chunks and provide a rich wealth of information, I've started taking sketchnotes in meetings, at church and at conferences.

This is a good book not just for the content but also for the design, and both aspects can inspire you if you are fond of using pen and paper (or at least stylus and tablet) to capture what's happening around you. While the concept of a "Sketch Note" seems like something that should not really have a name, the book makes a great case for why visually oriented notes work well. The book contains many examples of notes using the style, and a number of Sketch Notes by practitioners of the craft, including such details as which pens and notebooks they prefer. The book ends with a number of exercises that encourage you to explore your ability to draw using a variety of techniques which make drawing less terrifying that it might be. From the message, to the examples, to the details such as covers with rounded corners (a form that is useful even for those older than "Board Book Age"), you may find this book inspires you to be creative and more attentive when you are taking notes.

I love the idea of sketchnotes. I expected to love this book, but upon reading it I found it lacking.*First, it was rather repetitive. Information in the different chapters overlapped a lot.*Second, I expected more help with creating my own sketchnotes. There is room for practicing different icons and whatnot in the back, but only a few pages. I expected more examples and places to practice typography.*Third, the book was hard to follow in places. It makes good sense to write this book as a big sketch note. However some of the examples from other contributors were all over the place and hard to follow. To me this negates the point of taking notes in this fashion. If you can't make sense of them later, what's the point?*I probably would have been better off buying the workbook first, but I just didn't know. And with the big price difference (the workbook is ~$35) I started here.In general I'd say skip this and just get the workbook (though I haven't actually bought or worked through that). This is a nice compilation of examples from the author in the shape of a book though.

First of all, this is a beautiful book, having a matte(?) finish, full of illustrations, using the very medium to 'deconstruct' itself. I even love the accent color (orange) used throughout the book. Loved the guest sketch noters. Don't get the Kindle edition. Appreciate the book in its native format as the author intended.The videos were okay. I felt they added little value, as the author merely clarified the concepts in his book. Given the passion the author has for sketch-noting, I kinda expected him to burst upon the screen like those guys from the infomercials. He had a business-like demeanor in front of the camera. If there was just one chapter worth watching, I would suggest watching the segment where Mike does a sketch note in real time, listening to Mr. Mueller. Oh- the online videos were not captioned. I would suggest that Peachpit require that future video submissions have subtitling and/or captioning.I primarily bought this book to give me ideas and techniques that i can share with my students. Then, they can make meaningful connections in studying their subject matter, i.e., Math, Reading, Science, in a visual way. It's also nice to undertake some sketch-noting during those professional development workshops. This book delivers for me, full of little tips I can immediately put to use.I feel that this book was somewhat superficial. It is indeed a quick read. I would have liked more coverage on Dual-Coding Theory, for instance. Little coverage was given to speaker patterns. What about having a 'listening triage', weeding out white noise and capturing relevant ideas? What if someone in the audience has an insightful idea? A heated debate? I'm not asking for a full blown treatise; just better coverage on listening and capturing ideas quickly and effectively.Another example; I rely on sign language for communications. In a meeting, I just can't look down and start doodling (or jotting) away. I have to watch, and retain as much as I can before there's a lull in the meeting, then I furiously scribble down my notes. At least, sketching images may be an acceptable substitute in writing notes during lulls as they're quicker to make and i can get back to the presentation at hand. In this book, Mike describes a 'brain cache' area, but doesn't really explore it. I would have liked to acquire better memorization techniques so I can hold ideas until I put them to paper.Mike Rohde is correct that sketch noting is an invaluable addition to a person's toolset in acquiring, retaining, and making meaningful connections between ideas. Not only Dual Coding Theory helps us understand why we retain and make meaningful connections between ideas in a visual manner, it is also kinesiology, the very act of sketching, that helps tie it all together. Thus, sketch notes have the most value to the person who did the notes; it truly helps him/her retain and understand what was presented at that workshop, meeting, etc. Even sketch noting while digesting a heavy treatise helps an individual better grasp and utilize the ideas being learned.However, I find an odd disconnect in treating sketch notes for wide distribution via social media. Sketch notes have little utility in communicating ideas to other people who were not present at the meeting, workshop, etc. I've looked at a couple of sketch notes in the wild and really couldn't understand them. I may grasp bits and pieces, but i get the feeling that I had to be there to understand these sketch notes fully. That said, sketch notes have some utility for communicating ideas with people who actually attended the meeting, workshop, etc., but didn't do any sketch-noting.I may be missing the point, but why would sketch noters share their sketch notes on social media, when they are ill-equipped vehicles in communicating ideas? Is it because they may have some intrinsic artistic merit? Just treat sketch notes as a tool that a person can utilize in capturing and synthesizing ideas in a visual form, and not for any intrinsic artistic value they may have. Overall, a good book.

I discovered the first edition of this book a decade ago and it had a profound impact on me then. Last year, a friend of mine told me it was being revised and something inside of me said, you have to read it again. So, along with 25 seekers, we have spent each Monday evening since Sept 2017 working through the text, chapter by chapter. It has been an amazing and heart-opening journey for all of us (and most of us grounded in the Christian stream). What is revealed here is about Love and and reflects the underlying truth of all perennial wisdom. It also is a guide to deepening one's personal journey with God/Allah/Presence...whatever you choose to name that Love. It is a teaching to return to again and again and again. To read and to practice. I can read a chapter, return a few days later and find myself highlighting and commenting on something I missed a few days before. Of all the books on spirituality that I have read over the decades (and I have read a bunch)...this one is at the top of the list. Dare you to pick it up with an open heart, you will not remain unchanged.

This book is a revised and updated 25th anniversary edition of “Living Presence” by Kabir Helminski. The subject of the book is spelled out by the subtitle: “The Sufi Path to Mindfulness and the Essential Self”. The author shares with the readers some of the experiences, reflections, and knowledge that have been preserved within traditional Sufism, i.e., a spiritual training that was “developed within the historical and cultural matrix of Islam”. The aim of this particular training was to activate specific latent faculties of the mind, which remain dormant in ordinary man. Only through the activation and then uniting of these inner faculties, can a person fulfill his or her ultimate evolutionary purpose.Helminski describes a number of basic concepts, techniques, and approaches that have been extracted from the writings of Jalaluddin Rumi, a 13th century Persian mystic. Among these basic concepts are “ego”, “self”, “heart”, “spirit”, and “Love” (rather oddly defined by the author as “The electromagnetic milieu in which we all exist”). Consequently, “soul is the child of the union of self and spirit”. Rumi allegorically presented such a union as a couple of lovers. Rumi’s celebrated “Mathnawi” illustrates the whole gamut of challenges that a lover has to overcome before he can be united with his beloved.Helminski states that “through changing the energy level of the brain, we can activate a different kind of brain function”. In other words, during the initial stage of the process, the mind undergoes a subtle but significant transmutation. The mind’s inner structure is gradually unfolded, layer-by-layer. (This may be compared to the splitting of atomic orbitals; in their natural form, the orbitals remain degenerate; but when exposed to a strong magnetic field, they may be split into several sub-levels.) The next phase of the process aims at uniting these newly activated layers. Therefore, the methodologies that were suitable for unfolding the inner layers of the mind become obsolete for the implementation of the following phases of the process. In the symbolic language of poets, this change was reflected by replacing a couple of lovers with the simultaneous union of several couples of lovers. Not many readers have recognized that such an updated spiritual methodology was quite precisely disclosed in Shakespeare’s plays. Some readers will have noticed that Shakespeare’s overall narrative illustrates the challenges that four couples of lovers must overcome before they may be united at the same time and place. It was at that time and place, i.e., in the late sixteenth century England, that a new phase of the spiritual teaching was initiated. It is important to notice that this new phase of the teaching was projected within the secular context of Western society. At the time of the initiation of this new phase, the previously disclosed techniques became sterile. In practical terms, the specific techniques introduced by Rumi ceased to be valid. It seems that Helminski is well aware that attempting to practice Sufism today is like dealing “with the aspects of those forms that were suited to another time and place”. Yet, his presentation is clearly limited to a form that was projected within a select group of people in thirteenth century Minor Asia. Here is an example. Helminski explains that a whirling dervish becomes “a transformer of cosmic energies through conscious intention, love, and the electrodynamic effect of the human nervous system rotating in relation to the earth’s magnetic field”. However, he does not specify what sort of transformation a whirling dervish may experience today. Rumi is on the record saying that he applied the whirling dancing specifically for the thirteenth-century people of Minor Asia, because of certain characteristics of theirs. But these characteristics are not to be found quite to the same extent among the 21st century Westerners. In other words, instead of developing themselves in accordance with the currently operating cosmic matrix, the whirling Westerners may turn themselves into imitations of medieval Orientals.Despite these shortcomings, “Living Presence” is a welcomed book for it is a useful introduction for those who are looking for direction on how to enhance their lives and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. Helminski provides overall principles, which may serve as initial pointers: “Practically speaking, if we can shift our orientation from the exclusive concentration on satisfying our desires to a love of sharing in friendship -a cosmic Love that sees others as ourselves- then our identity or ego, is transformed by these forms of love”. There is probably no religion or spiritually oriented group who would not agree with this statement.

If you have ever studied Gurdjieff and worked with the wish to awaken to one’s highest possibility, this book is the best guide I have run across so far. I bring up Gurdjieff because in my own work and studies many truths were elusive. I intend to go back and read Beelzebub again after trying in my daily life to apply aspects of this book.Kabir Helminski has a website where you can hear many of his talks and also if you look him up on YouTube you can find more inspiration to fuel the journey.

A comprehensive broad and informed perspective on reality and presence. While not a work book or a do it yourself guide it covered areas important to understand, consider, and contemplate. It sheds light on a topic in which much confusion exists and presents a balanced supported view free of dogma. It is interspersed with Rumi quotes and usefully defines key words used as ‘Heart’, ‘Essence’, and ‘Love’ in the light of Presence. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey.

Excellent book, but needs to be read slowly.
